What I especially like about ClamAV is that it's not a big "internet security suite" or anything like that, since I generally find them obtrusive and OS X has enough of its own built-in security features that the only feature I think is really necessary but not already provided is a utility for malware scanning.Īnyhow, that's my 2¢, and I hope you can find something that suits your needs. but it can be up to you how much extra background stuff you want running on your computer for malware detection. I generally just update and scan manually every once in a while, since I'm not hugely concerned about getting viruses on my system given what I do with it. Once you have ClamAV installed you can set up a cron-job (or a launchd service, if you're feeling bold) which can update the detection database periodically in the background, as well as a scan of whatever part of your system you'd like (home directory, whole disk, etc). If you're comfortable using Terminal, then I would recommend using the ClamAV package provided by MacPorts, Homebrew, or Fink (pick your poison, they all have their pros and cons I prefer Homebrew, because it's IMHO the most simple solution of the three).
